  • My wife and I walked by the Crepe Place last night on the way to get dinner and heard a really funky
hammond organ/horn section funk band playing there.

They are called Frequency Jones and they were really good. I played in really tight horn funk bands in the 70's
and I'm a funk snob and these young guys were really kicking out the jams. I was really impressed.
Honestly, I haven't heard a funk band EVER in Santa Cruz that really seemed as funky as the great East and South Coast
funk bands and the great horn bands of the Bay Area in the late 60's , early 70's (Tower of Power, The Loading Zone, The Electric
Flag, et. al), so your friend is in for a treat if he can catch them.

    Here's the poop:

    Frequency Jones
at Crepe Place; $8 adv/$10 door; 9pm Saturday, June 20th
Santa Cruz’s closest thing to a “supergroup,” Frequency Jones features nine hometown funksters handpicked from some of the best local bands for a surf town jam session that will keep you moving all night long. Led by Renzo Staiano of Universal Language and featuring members of Wooster, the Committee, Soul Majestic and Afrodesia, the collective uses a beefy horn section that pumps up the funk for a distinctive big band sound. So if you want to tune in to who’s who in Central Coast soul and rock, ignore the other static and dial up this frequency.
    • By the way,
this may just be a coincidence, but a woman from France contacted me over a month ago and said that here
daughter was coming to Santa Cruz for a month and that she wanted her to take music lessons from me while she
was here. We arranged to do this and then, the last time I wrote her, her email had been disconnected and
I have absolutely no way of reaching her again.

I don't suppose this might be the same person? If so, I'd love it if you'd connect me up with them again, as I have
several student openings right now, having just finished a long European tour.

      If not, C'est la vie
